Dodo Lantern referbishemnt 2010

Hello one and all! One event I help out with and participate in is the annual Lantern Festival every September at Ulverston, Cumbria. Here the video I shot last year with an ordinary point and shoot camera.

A quick note on the construction of these lanterns, they are produced by the cutting and taping willow withies into different shapes, then tissue paper is added with diluted PVA glue (half and half mix of PVA glue and water) Illumination comes from a candle installed in the main body of the Lantern (LED light is used in lanterns where narrow spaces where a candle would result in buning the lantern) Each year there are different theme for people to build lanterns (In 2009 it was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, This year was Circus of Dreams)

Last year I produced the Dodo featured in this video. I had originally wanted to have it with wings extended and looking back the top of the head wasn't very well illuminated by the candle installed in the belly of the lantern.

For this year I wanted to create the wings I originally planned for and add LED lighing into the Dodo for non-candle based illumination (much safer for indoor display)

Front right view. To be able to work a little easier I tempoarally added a side stand on the rear right of the lantern so I wouldn't have to keep propping the Dodo against tables and chairs.

After a few more hours of manipulating the withies, liberal use of masking tape, instalation of LEDs and gluing up of tissue paper results in the final lantern!

Word Practice 13-6-10

these words that I type may never be read by another human, No! I shall not limit myself to say no human, nothing shall read this. As I type I only look at the keyboard and nothing else. From a moment to moment point I only know what is and not what was or shall be. I do have a general asumption that what I type is lead by my sole experieces and how I inturprut them but also I haven't planned this out as this is a free writing session.

Reguarding any puncuation, Grammar or spelling errors I can only know what I type from a moment to moment basis. I might spot a word typed wrong and endevor to remover that error but I only look at the keyboard! So any half thoughts, missplacement of words or subtext is on a moment to moment bassis.

Fuck I looked up. But I carry on for that moment has gone and I continue with what I speak..

This is an exersise in re aquainting myself with sitting infront of a computer to write. For the past several weeks, I have been working on a production where I need to get my ideas across in a very clear and quick medium and I have somewhat have lost that skill, To sit and tyope. For the moment I sit here In my office in Lancaster getting used to typimng again as I have only really used a laptop for work and I want to be able to sit down infront of a computer with the sole intwention to write words.

With that being said, why should I sit down to wqrite with a keyboard? couldn't i only give have thoughts in a text or e-mail. No! with the world moving so fast mone's words need to carry meaning! In conversation my words have a fullness which I chose to use as it engages those with what I have to say. to instant message, everyone needs to be reactive to what is going on in the converstion. To answer questions on a moment to moment basis, These words don't carry weight to them.

The words that spin in my head are clarity. The wod has to be my point that I must pursue...

ok that is aload of bullshit with me trying to get back into this line of thought The real reason why I sit here, going word per word is simple. Action, consiquence. I might have a good idea what I'm going to say but until I sit here and type out these words (the one's you are reading) I don't know what is going to be next! for goodness sake I could throw a panda into the conversation right now! But I won't as that would be silly...

I worry that my words don't have meaning if I uload them to the internet. so the only way I thought I could do it is to keep looking down and never look back and say "oh, that's my old work, I'm working on something super awesome" and then I just keep seeing other people doing stuff that is what I was going to do. The Brian Wilson effect id you will reguarding his magnum opus Smile. But ulitmatly what I have learn't is that it's only copying if I do what I did before! I can do new exciting, embrasing my ideas with the knowledge that it will have been said because I say it with my voice. Or do I?

Because I need to say that me, the me on the on the outside might be a bit odd or strange. But it is all an act! I need to present mysef in the "ordinary" world as somewhat normal, and for the most part I do this very well. but for me to truly be free to do what I need to do, I need to be able to let me be me. It might not match, it might not work BUT! I will be doing whzt I do and that is the best I can do it.

So please don't run away and say Peter is strange. Everyone just needs to get over each other and see what good there is in everyone and accept that I might just be strange. I'm still me and what I do is good! If I worry about what I'm doing and what everyone else is thinking then I'm not going to be me! I'm going to me the restranded me and you will only get part of the experience. I and don't like that!

I do it so then I can be my best. If I don't fit with you then it might just mean we don't fit... But I am willing to be what you want me to be so long as you know that when you want the best I MUST BE ME, TRULY!

And I'm going to talk about my experience with Swine Flu!*

*might not have been swine flu...

It's was misserable, it's not even a proper illness. Back in 08 (I think) I have that flu bug and that kept me in bed, which wasn't to bad as I did feel ill. But Sweine flu, it's doesn't get you completly so I tried doing work and after two weeks of coughing I was bored as heck!

Slightly depressed

First I have a splitting headache for two days, this morning my voice was mess up like I smoked 60 a day then this.

Why does this keep happening!? This looks so boring, why does Hollywood keep doing this??? Zombies are awesome as they are a reflection on humanity and people in general. But if it's not a fight for survival then no good.

Well I guess I will need to do something about that...

I have WAY to much free time

Right, assuming that in the greater land mass of Britain is roughly 800,000 miles, this includes England, Wales and Scotland (sorry Ireland, come the next ice age though!) NOW, we are told that the roads are clogged up with cars but this is complete rubbish as I will now show...

Assuming a typical car is 20 foot long, some longer (buses, lorries, vans) some shorter (city cars, etc, etc) but on average I think it's a good number. There is 5,280 feet in you're average mile (according to my lappy's length calculating thingy) There are roughly thirty four million cars on the roads today. Now we have the numbers, time to do the math!

Right! multiply the length of car to the number of cars or L*N resulting in the number of feet of cars on the road which we will call X Take X and devide that by the number of feet in a mile which we will ∑.

The formula looks like this

The magic number that we arrive at is 128,787 miles worth of cars, now that is allot of cars BUT that leaves 671,213 worth of tarmac. Also thinking that no one will be willing to test out my theory by getting every car bumper to bumper then I feel pretty safe with this number though if you do have more accurate numbers then feel free to keep them to yourself. If you want to ask me any questions about why on earth I would be at all interested in answering the trivial question well, yeah... I don't know!

A world of collaboration - my adventures

Sorry that My past posts have been rather sparse in their content. I'm hoping to become more proactive in blogging as allot is happening this year so I will be posting more than once a month LOL

Anyways, on with the post. Just as a side note, the end of 2008 was just crazy, from October onwards I have been all over the place not to mention the IWM student film festival fun. So in the past three months I have made plans for three feature length productions (writing, designing and acting as producer) The ball is going to start rolling come February on all three at the same time and I'm ready! But these three productions all stand on their own in their complexity and message.

With a residential Guerilla Film-making course up at Ambleside at the end of October has yield new collaborations with young people in the North West of England (they are like rooster teeth up here!) no longer can I sit on my ass thinking up cool ideas, I have to keep up now which is really great!

My own personal film project hasn't launched as I have a lack of confidence, yes... It's true. I have had to many ideas to try and keep up in the air is near impossible but with new collaboration comes a renewed desire to visit old notes, scribbles, scripts and even old tests from college. All these ideas for little things and being boiled and reduced down into a thick soup of greatness, pure flavor! no filler! don't think thats how it goes, who cares IT SOUNDS GOOD AS I TYPE xD

So 2009 is shaping up to be a good looking year with equal parts success and failures (I'm a pessimist when no one is looking)

A thousand Directions at once

Funny how things happen in my life, for months nothing interesting happens then I'm doing 50 jobs at once...

Ok, so I'm exaggerating a bit, but this month is going to be crazy. First of all I've been helping out on a Gurilla film-making course last month and this which has been a bit of a thrown in the deep end affair and a steep learning curve on education and motivation of other people *I'm just used to talking to myself xS* but it's been fun!

Next, I edited a video for the Imperial War Museum's Student Film Festival, which I got though! so on Tuesday the 18th I will be in London so that should be fun.

Plus I've my own projects that I'm working on so I want to keep those in the air. I've filmed a music video on Wednesday and now I'm editing that (looks good!) and I've two ideas floating in my brain with provisional outlines on paper. So I want to get those down quickly as the beginning of 09 I will be getting some work with a production company near where I am so that is going to be awesome!!!

I have also started the nasty habit if going though podcasts that have been in my iTunes for the past three years (once they were invented) so that is fun and distracting...

So yeah, the year two thousand and nine is really going to be MAD and fun!!!

Reality suckage - day 8117 of my life

So I've been meaning to post this for a while now but, what the hell better late than never.

So on an unfortunate trip to large mega shopping center in north west England, I wondered into a music shop *guess which one :S* and I took my selection of DVDage to the tills to pay for them (though with hie sight, I would have got a better result if I had walked out the shop setting of the poverty alarm MOTHA FUCKA!!!!) and this is where I start to get pissed of. A spotty teenager is there taking stock, not of the physical variety but of the mind, basically drooling. I try to get his attention by doing a Brian Blessed impression, but to no avail, THEN a totally hot 18 year old girl walks up and is all 'OMG, I R losted in this big shop, can U halp m3 :3' and the god damn speck of a man walks of...

At this point I bellowed with all my might 'GET BACK HERE NOW!' causing for a breath moment, the entire north west of England to fall silent................ then!!!!!! the tiny speck asked ' do you need some help?'

at this point I can go any further as, well, I became incredibly middle class and said 'well erm, can I pay for these?' BUT THEN!!!!!! he said ' well if you want to go over to the tills I will be with you in a minute...

This makes up only one of the thousands of examples of poor customer care that is now prevalent in this world (or is it just mine?) so yeah, I like computers as they do exactly what I want them to do... most of the time......

But I was pissed, REALLY pissed.

For 2 years now, I've been in limbo. Between the past and a new beginning, but always I have been lacking in one thing, the reason to carry on.

Many people will tell you that there are only a few stories in the world, these people are not story tellers. What makes us want to listen to stories again and again are those stories that are rooted in ourselves.

So I need to find that that is linking all of us. And the only way I can do that is to live life, and you can't get that siting at a desk you aren't going to get that.

Like a beach after a storm, the beach has been scoured smooth. So soon my ideas will be no longer disjointed and rough but a solid story. I hope is do this well...

Asus Eee PC song praising - Day 1

this was a un-expected happening. Me, writing from a new ASUS Eee PC. But hey, what ever... I'm now typing away on the tiny keyboard

So after wondering about Preston's PC World, when I come across a display for the ASUS Eee PC, which for the past few months from the interweb, thinking about having one. Looking at the price, options and why I couldn't have one for such and so reasons. I hadn't had a good go with the Eee PC and after trying the CloudBook running XP I wasn't to impressed with the mini laptop idea. So booting up the Eee PC, the person who was with me wandered over to me and said "OH! thats small!" so I told her about the tiny compy. After a few minutes of giving the pro's and con's (tiny, tiny tiny!!!) she was convinced and I was getting convinced myself. So based on he title of this blog, you can guess the out come xD

So! onto what this blog is really about. What I think of the Eee PC? well, First of all I will tell you about which Eee PC we picked. Well it's 4G in galaxy black, as is to say it's got the webcamera and 512 of ram with a 4 GB SSD. They didn't have any of the 8.9 inch screen ones in but the 7 inch does the job very well. After a few hours and a fair bit of play I think I can start to talk about so things I've found out about (so far...)

First; It's damn small... One of the big selling points of the Eee PC is it's size, or lack there of. it's so compact that you can really take t with you anywhere, weighing in at 0.92 kilograms (2 lbs for those who aren't metric peoples) and fitting in the palm of you're hand makes the Eee PC a no brainer for travelers or those who know the MacBook Air is a rip of (and thats coming from a Mac man)

Second; ease of use... Starting up the Eee PC couldn't be easier. You boot up for the first time and first of all, you notice a lack of noise like nothing, completely silent. The setup wizard is super easy and withing a minute I was done, ready to try out the Eee. The Eee comes loaded with the essentials for the web (firefox) Instant messging (skype and PidGin) office work (OpenOffice) and lots of other stuff. Would have liked to have seen the Gimp already on the Eee, but apart from that, super happy!

Thirdly; It's tiny!!! Ok, so the Eee is tiny, hence the keyboard does feel a bit crapped upon first try. But after a few hours, you get used to it.

Tune in tomorrow as I do such exciting things as download a program and connect a external monitor

P.S I chucked a couple of different video formats including Divx 6.0, MPEG 4 and photoJPEG and they played fine...

My current though on the HD gen gaming consoles OR why I won't be buying a PS3...

I'm not an avid gaming buff and over the past couple of years I've been looking at the next/current/what ever gen-gen gaming solution thingys. I've talked about gaming in the past but not in a definitive form so now I'm going to (since getting a 360 *again*)

This post may contain a content that may offend playstation fanboys, if you take this to seriously then you have more problems that I can help you with ^^

So I've got a Wii and a 360 and the combination makes me very happy. The Wii is lots of fun (Mario Galaxy being king) and after a few weeks with my shinny 360 and the orange box, I'm finally getting into fps's. One thing I have a problem with is Sony's effort to be next-gen gaming. Here's a short list of things that I have a problem with Sony games efforts.

Number 1; Sony not going forward - AKA why are they still selling the PS2?
I would have thought that if you are bringging out a new games system, you stop selling the previous generation. Obviously Sony doesn't think so. Now I will say that the PS2 is very good (maybe one of the motivators of keeping it on sale) but if a non games savvy person (like you're mum) were to walk into a shop to buy a PS3 for someone, they won't know the difference between the two apart for the PS2 being one less and a big price difference. Which moves me onto the next point nicely...

Number 2; Backwards compatibility OR lack there of...
This is just a great idea for a console, start selling it with backwards compatibility and then sell it without! Thats great for marketing...

All the other consoles managed this! while getting the 360 I got a copy of halo 2 and without having to do an update played it out the gate. Nintendo has a sort of two sided version *sort of* not only can you play all you're GameCube games, but the virtual console is a very nice addition (even though you can't plugin an old NES cartridge) The PS3 doesn't offer this kind of security that you can go back and enjoy you're favorite games of old, not unless you take into account point one.

Number 3; Blu-Ray is the future! OR holy crap we won! thank the tech gods!!!
This was a big selling point of the PS3 and what put me of from the start. If you can remember back a couple of years to when he 360 was put out, HD-DVD drives were still to much so they stick with DVD *hooray!* and they year after Nintendo finally caught up with the Wii *hooray! even though I can't watch DVD's*. But Sony decided to plump for the Blu-Ray drive even though this made the PS3's price tag reflect half what it actually cost to make because Sony is a hardware company and therefore have to go hardware heavy. But Blu-Ray was and still is a beta format, the spec is always changing. If in the unlikely event of HD-DVD winning the next-gen-HD-disc-war-thingy you would have the PS3 in the bin.

Number 4; Most expensive games console EVA! cheapest Blu-Ray player at the moment...

Again, a big selling point of the PS3 was the idea that it was a cheap Blu-Ray player (but not really though) This wasn't something that mattered to me as I've only got an old, crappy CRT. Marketing the PS3 as a cheap Blu-Ray player might have been a great idea to bump sales for people who want to enjoy their film in HD, but with the current price drop the PS3 is now £30 more than an entry level Blu-Ray player. Would you pay £30 for the promise of next gen quality gaming? didn't think so!

Number 5; James Anonymous OR certain owners who think with their SIXAXIS's rather than their head...

The only conflict I've ever faced from another gamer has been over the PS3. The animosity from them to me was very interesting. So the conversation went along these lines of this

Peter; good, how 'bout you?
James; Got me a PS3! so much better than the 360
Peter; so you got a 360 to?
James; nope...
Peter; so how do you know it's better?
James; well, it's got blu-ray
Peter; and?
James; well, blu-ray makes it better!
Peter; "..."
James; shut up!

SO yeah, not really a fault of Sony or gaming, but an observation...

I may speak blind not owning a PS3 and I'm sure that there are allot of people who love their PS3's. It's just not for me xD

Biography of myself to this point

So over the past couple of years, I've been making films and it's now a major part of my life now. while updating my online profiles I decided to write a little bio of how I came to be who I am now. So enjoy this little glimpse into my past life.

I've lived a somewhat interesting life to this point, here is a snippet...

Born in the Lake District of the UK, I've lived in the country all my life, son to a pair of optometrists and so didn't wish to go into that line of work. Originally I wanted to help people, only I didn't have great social skillz, but I was technically minded so I wanted for a long time to become a mechanic. After determining that I didn't want to work on other people’s cars for the rest of my life, I decided that creativity was the thing for me.

Since 1995, after seeing Toy Story in the cinema (one the most important points in my entire life) I wanted to become a film maker, but being and autistic child I couldn't articulate this idea to the degree that I really needed to. We did have a Hi8 camcorder, but this didn't work out for me as I didn't know how to tell stories yet using the camera. I could take pretty pictures, I just didn't know how to put them together. Gradually over the years, I would go though many computers, but I wanted to make films and it wouldn't be until 2004 that I could get what I wanted. After giving up with wanting to be a mechanic, I Joined a Film & TV course at Lancaster & Morecambe in late 2004 and I got my first Mac and from then on I was set.

Making films is such a large part of my life now. I wouldn't be able to tell you what I would have done without making films, it's such a rich a power entity that it's helped me become the person I am today. All I can say is I love making films and I thank everyone who listens to me and cases about me, because without those people I couldn't be who I am.

This is only a part of my previous life, but I didn't want to bore you xD

A.M.I.T.I.H.T.S.F.B.E.T.S.E

A moment in time where it's hard to stand far back enough to see everything, or at least enough of my own world.

So today I visited Kendal to catch up with my mate Adam Clarke to talk about creative projects. Mainly Machinima and my film script 'Danny'

We visited Game and looked though the Wii Games, me having acquired a Wii before Christmas Holiday. Adam is aliment on buying a PS3 even when they were £425 at launch but I argured that the PS3, unless you want to have Blu-ray isn't much better than the 360, plus the 360's games are cheaper by about £10 on average. He didn't think much of this and I couldn't talk much as I've only got a Wii at the moment (did used to have a 360 but sold it for laptop funding, BUT ONCE I GET SOME SPARE MONIES!!! gonna get a 360 again xD )

Anyway after that important discussion, we moved onto the matter of finding some coffee and cake *still haven't played Portal :'( * we visited a bar called Bootleggers, partly because of the lure of free wifi but there was no cake :'( anyway, Adam is getting into Machinima using Second Life as you can see below.

I haven't got into Second Life yet as I'm anti social... *cough* NO! I'm very nice in reality but I just don't get Second life, I could understand if you had objecives/being able to do battle with others across the world. Second life is like Big Brother, only more boring >:(

Personally, I'm getting into Cinema 4D cause it is something I can understand xD be sure to watch out for more on that! anyways...

Today was kind of a weired day today, as I feel as if the winds have stopped blowing and I'm adrift in a sea of possibility but I'm in the middle of all possibilities, but if I go for one, I would miss out on everything else. I've lost structure in my life and I float from point to point. I want to get on with my film project but I'm dependent on other people. I don't want to stay in this cycle of waiting for possibilities from other people, so I'm thinking about doing a small personal project like an animated short but I lack the confidence of starting it. I've lots of ideas I came up with during 2007 but I was getting used to the idea of making a feature length film. I guess I need to just have a mind dump sort of video where I just try out lots of stuff.

Also with the start of the new year, I've been teaching myself some new skills for animation, Flash mainly. I really Like Flash, even though it doesn't do everything I would want it to do, but thats how you learn to work within a medium.

The New Year of our Lord of Two Thousand and Eight!

So 2007 is dead, making way for a new, sexier year!

As I run blindly into the future, I look back at what I've done, and I think it was pretty good... One European trip with some StrangE peoples, a new hat and a multitude of new stories to tell.

Anyways, I haven't blogged in a while, so here we go!

--Films and expression--

2007 was spent gearing up for making my first film. Meeting M dot Strange really inspired me to tell my story and not let anyone stand in my way. So I started writing which isn't the easiest thing in the world for me, but after a few dead ends, talks with friends and a few short stories later I landed on my current project! I don't want to give to much away at this time (unless you chat with me online then I've probably told you a thousand times) But it's going to be part road movie, part apocalypse flick and a social drama film, all in one!

With being the kind of person who tends to give away golden ideas to complete strangers, I tend to blurt out great advice. In my mind, this is a good thing (not only for the person I advise) as I learn how how to articulate my ideas so then I can understand them. Now that may sound weired but in the past (when I was a youngling) I couldn't have normal conversations as I would either not speak and be depressed, or I wouldn't stop speaking about one subject, not actually having a conversation. Such is the life being a Dyslexic/Autistic person. Now I'm better :D

--The lighter side of life--

As 2007 was in it's last few weeks, Christmas came and brought with it a Nintedo Wii (actually I bought it about a week before Jesus's Birthday, but who am I to argue with the status quo??!?!) and with the Nintedo Wii came distraction for the rest of the world. Also, i've started watching lots of old Doctor Who episodes (the tom baker years mainly) as the are very win!!!

Nun's Story

An animated short, done in under 24 hours (from sound recording to final edit)

This animation was commissioned by the maker of We are the Strange Mike Belmont, who challenged me to make a short film featuring a monster and a nun in a neckbrace...

I'm planning to make more shorts in this sort of animation in the next few weeks, as well as planning my first feature length live action film.

This could be one of my better photoshop works. Originally the picture was for a a short movie to be made over the next few weeks, the idea behind this drawing was to difficult to pull of in real life.

New sound Equipment

On all of my previous, I was always hampered by poor sound quality (even with a Sennheiser microphone, I couldn't get the best sound always) But a few days ago, I received a new set of sound recording equipment, starting with a Rode Microphone, Boom Pole and Marantz PMD660 (from here)

Here's a video test with the new sound equipment as well as my good 'ol Sony HDR-FX1e high def camcorder.

Went to an Ostrich farm today (how many of you can say that?) and had lots of fun, but the ostrich is a very secretive creature, that doesn't give ay indication to what they are thinking.
